5 Steps to Making Homemade Wine

There are essentially five steps to making homemade wine. They can be explained as follows:

1.) If you are going to use grapes then it is essential to see to it that the grapes are harvested properly. Once this is done, it is also essential to see that the stems in the grapes are not used as the taste of the wine is greatly affected if the stem of the grape is used. Once the stem is removed from the grapes it is also essential to remove the skin so that the juice can be easily released from the grapes. Once the grapes are obtained as such, crushing of the grapes is done as it helps preserve the aroma.

2.) The second step in making wine at home will be to perform fermentation. Fermentation is done by adding yeast to the crushed grapes. Yeast helps to preserve the grapes and at the same time ensures a stable and consistent conversion. During this stage of fermentation more juice needs to be extracted and hence press juice is done in order to increase the yield.

3.) The third step will be to perform a secondary fermentation. This step is done at almost the same time at which the wine is aging. Since you are the wine maker at home, it is up to you to decide as to how your wine will ferment.

4.) The next stage will be to perform Blending. It is mostly used in order to improve some batches which may be slightly lacking, when compared to the other batches.

5.) The last step is to perform bottling. This is the period in which the wine is poured into bottles. During this stage optionally you may wish to add sulfites as it will help to end the fermentation process and at the same time, it will help to preserve the wine. After this, the wine is sealed properly with a traditional cork.

By employing this simple process, making wine at home would become a very enjoyable procedure.

The Basic Elements Found in Every Wine Making Log

Lots of people who make their own wine at home have the habit of preserving there own kitchen logs. You will be able to find a lot of information in these logs like perfected recipes, likes and dislikes of guests who would visit regularly etc. Maintaining such logs help running a kitchen in a much efficient manner.  If you decide that you are going to start making your own wine at home then this a requirement!

The most important key in making your own wine at home is to be consistent and also to have your own basic set of ingredients intact. Keeping your own wine making log will help you be consistent and at the same time will ensure that you have your own success track log. When you start your wine making log, it may not contain much but over the many months of preparation you’ll find your own logs very valuable.

Some people think that they can relay on there own memory but it is a far safer bet to have your own wine making log to be consistent in your wine preparations. After preparing many different batches you may forget what your initial ingredients were and this may lead to inconsistent results.

In your wine making log you must write the most important ingredients that you use- ingredients which would actually have a final impact in your wine. These could ingredients like the brand of yeast that you use or the temperature at which you store your wine or the amount of sugar you add to certain fruits and stuff.

To be clear, the following are the kinds of information that you will want to add to your own wine making log:

•    The number of fruits added.
•    The exact amount and brand of yeast used.
•    The type and amount of sugar that is added.
•    The type and the exact amount of nutrients added.

It is also necessary to key in your dates in your log. Like for example you would want to write when you added sugar to your wine or when you racked you wine etc. It is also important to write when you bottle your wine in your wine making log. It is also a good practice to write about the taste of your batch of wine produced.

Another good practice would be to write down your hydrometer readings in your wine making log. These readings would help you remember the exact amount of water or alcohol that was added to ferment you wine. It is a good idea to record the hydrometer readings before and after the fermentation process.

Along with your own recipes and readings you may also want to write your references in your wine making log. For example you may want to take a print out of your conversion charts and key them in your log with the help of a binder.

You could write almost anything that you find suitable in your wine making log. The main problem that you may find when you’re logging is that you may not be consistent. But writing in your log regularly will solve the problem. In order to be more recorded you could use a binder to keep your log intact.
